Among Us has seen a lot of development over the years since its 2018 launch and explosion in popularity in 2020, and a new update is adding yet more new roles to make finding the impostor even more complicated.
This isn’t the first wave of new roles to take the game beyond simple crewmates and impostors. The most recent additions were the Tracker and Noisemaker for crewmates and Phantom for impostors back in 2024.
Now, though, with this week’s version 17.0.0 major updatealong with a costume of Paimon from Genshin Impact to add to its growing roster of crossovers, the game also gains two new roles: the crime-solving Detective for Crewmates and the acid-spitting Viper for Impostors.
Solve Crimes Or Dissolve Your Victims
Among Us is all about playing detective, and now there’s a role that gives players the tools they need to do that properly.
Detective is the first new role to add two unique abilities, the first of which notes to keep track of the locations of bodies, your list of suspects, and the type of impostor you’re dealing with.
The second Detective ability allows them to interrogate other players, giving them a chance to learn what they were doing when a murder was carried out. Only for one case at a time, though, unless you switch to the file for a different murder.
The number of times the interrogate ability can be used can be adjusted in the dropship’s lobby settings.
The other new role is the Viper, a new type of impostor that kills targets by spitting acid at them.
Since the Viper uses acid as its weapon, as you might expect, the bodies of crewmates it kills will gradually dissolve, eventually becoming just a bone before disappearing completely.
How long the dissolving process takes can also be adjusted in the dropship before the game begins, and if you play it right, you might be able to take someone out while everyone else is busy, leaving no trace of your crime.
Aside from the big new roles, version 17.0.0 also fixes some bugs and adds some quality of life changes, including updating the in-game guide to more clearly separate the 9 roles it now has, and doing the same for the role settings menu and practice mode.
